The controversy of being called “Doctor” is a topic of interest for all DNPs. A Doctor of Nursing Practice professional has a doctorate level of education. However, there has been a controversy for DNPs to be called “doctor.” It is important for DNPs to distinguish themselves separate from a Medical Doctor. In this way, there is no confusion for the patient about what healthcare provider is assisting them with their need. A DNP can help clarify their role by first introducing themselves as a Doctor of Nursing Practice. The DNP can then proceed to explain how they received the education to diagnose and treat patients safely if the patient needs more clarification. The doctorate level is the highest level of education that a nurse can receive, and they can use their knowledge of evidence-based practice to provide safe care for their patients. The DNP can also simply refer to themselves as a nurse practitioner. This may be a simpler solution to prevent confusion. It is unfortunate how controversial it is for nurse practitioners with a doctorate level of education to call themselves doctors, but it may avoid confusion by simply referring themselves to a nurse practitioner. Many healthcare professionals, such as pharmacists and physical therapists, now receive a doctorate level of education. A doctorate level of education will soon be the standard level of education to become a nurse practitioner. It is important to clarify your role as a nurse practitioner with a doctorate level of education.
