Haitian Heritage Month is an expansion of Haitian Flag Day which is celebrated on May 18th. The purpose is threefold: to (1) raise awareness and understanding of Haitian culture and traditions, (2) strengthen the self-esteem and ethnic pride of Haitian and Haitian American youth, and (3) celebrate Haitian achievements across the globe. It was first celebrated in Boston in 1998. Haitian culture is a blend of Taino and African traditions, mixed with European elements due to French colonization.
