This educational offering provides 0.25 CEU and was presented in the Clinical track. The course includes a PowerPoint (in PDF) and an MP4 video file from the presentation originally shared at the 14th National Doctors of Nursing Practice Conference at the Swissotel in Chicago, August 2021.
Cheryl Gould, DNP, NPP
Dr. Gould is a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and has worked with almost every psychiatric population and in every setting possible-forensic, geriatric, involuntary, adolescent, substance use, HIV/AIDs, inpatient/outpatient, telepsychiatry, homeless, and “the worried well”. In most of these settings, I encountered heavy tobacco use. As a former smoker, whose habit was encouraged by the behavioral health setting, the subject is very personal to me. Tobacco treatment is my passion and my goal is to make behavioral health treatment facilities tobacco-free.
Purpose
The purpose of this presentation is to identify and describe best practices for implementing a tobacco treatment program in a behavioral health setting. The implementation of this quality improvement project increased the rate of evidence-based tobacco screening and treatment in a busy mental health clinic. The interventions utilized in this project can be generalized for use with a diverse range of patients and in a variety of behavioral health settings.
