A colleague recently posted a personal story about suicide. I contacted him and he graciously agreed to share his story in this blog. Thank you, Dr. Bob Dent, for your transparency and courage to support others with your story. Read on…….
September is Suicide Prevention Month: Personal Story
For years, I silently battled suicidal thoughts and attempted suicide. In 2018, I sought help but didn’t fully disclose my struggles, deepening my isolation. It wasn’t until late 2021 that I opened up to my provider. Meds and virtual therapy didn’t help. By April 2022, I reached a breaking point and sought residential treatment. I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder, chronic suicidality, and later, complex PTSD. After three months of therapy followed by weekly therapy sessions, I began to see light, but true relief didn’t come until February 2024.
I’m sharing this because mental health needs to be openly discussed, especially in leadership. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Let’s use this month to remind ourselves that it’s okay to not be okay and that help is always available.
If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out. There is hope, and there is help.
