Dear author,
The accommodation was done for the patient and the nurse was more than happy to have the assignment change as no one gains pleasure from humiliation; however, as DNP educators I firmly believe that we need to educate the patient population. I do not feel that your suggested approach is too harsh. We as healthcare providers are trained…[Read more] -

Hello Avery,
This is a valid topic to discuss about so thank you for bringing this up. A doctorate in nursing is the highest degree available. However, most of the master degree nurse practitioners get paid on the same scale as doctorate nurse practitioners. There are some states that have nurse practitioners practice independently and in this…[Read more]

Hello Avery,
I am currently in my first year of my DNP program in Southern California. I am pursing an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner degree. Since I have started I have received some doubt from my colleagues and friends. The main question was if it was worth taking out loans from my private institution. They were questioning if I would make…[Read more]

Wendy – thank you for your post. I’m curious about the dynamics surround the patient that did not like the nurse due to an accent. Was this the one that was accommodated by changing the nurses’ assignment? Does your facility have a policy that documents that all patients will receive equitable services by a diverse group of professionals? It seems…[Read more]

Wendy replied to the topic Bills restricting or banning nurses with doctorate degrees from using "doctor" in the forum The Controversy of the DOCTOR Title 2 years, 7 months ago
In order to fulfill the ever-evolving demands of the healthcare delivery system, the DNP degree was developed. DNPs do not offer the same level of care as doctors, according to American Medical Association Resolution 211, hence they should not be addressed as doctors. According to the resolution, referring to doctors as nurses and other healthcare…[Read more]

Racism in nursing practice is something I have experience first hand at my workplace; One of the nurses had a bit of an accent and the patient humiliated the bedside nurse due to her accent and the nursing assignment was changed mid- shift due to this discriminator event. Having an inclusive environment and providing safe spaces for bold…[Read more]

Hi all,
As it turns out, it is not just NPs affected by this legislation or any related bills. Those who hold PhDs or EdDs may likewise be restricted from using it. What if a PhD does both academic and clinical settings? Should their students stop calling them doctor when they step into a clinical setting?
This has become more of a global…[Read more]

Hello Susan,
Thanks for your initial post and raising awareness on this issue. As healthcare is advancing and more nurses are increasing their scope of practice by pursing higher education, this seems to have become an actual issue. I am currently working in a small hospital in southern California. Our NPs here have master degrees so we call them…[Read more]

The controversy surrounding using the “Doctor” title among physicians and nurses with doctoral degrees stems from differing perspectives on the historical context, professional roles, and patient communication. Physicians, particularly medical doctors (MDs), have historically been associated with the title “Doctor” in patient care. The title h…[Read more]

The controversy about the use of “Doctor” as a title was really surprising when I started my DNP journey, I never knew we really had the option to us this title. In the past I have seen people from various fields of study use the title, though never really felt anyway about it. I do remember the origin of the word literally means to teach in…[Read more]
